Designing, cascading, and decoding counters
Ready-made counters count in binary or in tens, but real systems often need a stranger sequence, a much larger modulus, or a signal at one particular count. This topic shows how to design a synchronous counter for any sequence, chain counters together and pick out the states you need.
In this topic
- A design procedure for any sequence
- Flip-flop transition tables
- Worked example: a 2-bit Gray-code counter
- Worked example: an irregular sequence with D flip-flops
- Cascading counters
- Decoding a counter state
- A digital clock
- More counter applications
- Troubleshooting counters
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Key takeaways
