SPLDs, CPLDs, and FPGAs
One programmable chip can replace a board full of fixed gates, and the same chip can be rewired tomorrow. Simple PLDs, complex PLDs and FPGAs do this in different ways, and knowing how each one builds logic tells you which to choose.
In this topic
- Logic you can rewire
- Programmable arrays: PAL, PLA and GAL
- Worked example: fitting a function into a PAL
- Macrocells and their modes
- CPLDs: many SPLDs on one chip
- FPGAs: logic blocks, routing and I/O
- Look-up tables
- Worked example: loading a 3-input LUT
- Volatile configuration and hard cores
- Choosing SPLD, CPLD, FPGA or ASIC
