Interactions between members

Wherever two parts of a structure touch, they push or pull on each other with equal and opposite forces. Getting those pairs right on every free-body diagram is the single most important skill in analysing trusses, frames and machines.

  • Newton's third law at every connection
  • Drawing pairs consistently
  • Exploding a truss
  • Every part is in equilibrium
  • Internal and external depend on the boundary
  • Pins as separate bodies
  • Worked example: a two-member arch
  • Worked example: a pulley on a bracket
