Interactions between members
Wherever two parts of a structure touch, they push or pull on each other with equal and opposite forces. Getting those pairs right on every free-body diagram is the single most important skill in analysing trusses, frames and machines.
In this topic
- Newton's third law at every connection
- Drawing pairs consistently
- Exploding a truss
- Every part is in equilibrium
- Internal and external depend on the boundary
- Pins as separate bodies
- Worked example: a two-member arch
- Worked example: a pulley on a bracket
- Load paths
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Key takeaways
