Fluid statics

Water pushing on a dam, a gate or a tank wall is a distributed load that grows steadily with depth. Treat it exactly as the previous topic treated beam loads, and centroids give the size and position of the force.

In this topic

  • Water as a distributed load
  • Pressure, gauge and absolute
  • Pressure grows with depth
  • From pressure to a resultant force
  • Worked example: a tank wall
  • Worked example: a submerged gate
  • Sloping and horizontal surfaces
  • Worked example: will the wall tip?
  • Common mistakes to avoid
