Fluid statics
Water pushing on a dam, a gate or a tank wall is a distributed load that grows steadily with depth. Treat it exactly as the previous topic treated beam loads, and centroids give the size and position of the force.
In this topic
- Water as a distributed load
- Pressure, gauge and absolute
- Pressure grows with depth
- From pressure to a resultant force
- Worked example: a tank wall
- Worked example: a submerged gate
- Sloping and horizontal surfaces
- Worked example: will the wall tip?
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Key takeaways
