Evaluating transitions across modes

In an essay, a word such as however carries readers from one idea to the next. In a poster, web page or video, the same job falls to white space, colour, captions, cuts and sound. Evaluating a multimodal project means checking that every move between ideas, and between modes, is one the audience can follow.
