Uniform plane waves: derivation and characteristics

Solve the wave equation for the simplest possible case, a field that is the same everywhere across a plane, and the main facts about electromagnetic waves fall out: the fields are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of travel, their ratio is a fixed impedance, and their speed is set by the material alone.
