Halogens and noble gases
Groups 17 and 18 sit side by side but behave like opposites: the halogens are among the most reactive elements known, and the noble gases among the least. Yet chlorine keeps drinking water safe, and xenon, once thought incapable of bonding, forms a family of stable compounds.
