Chemical equilibria

Many reactions never use up their reactants completely. Instead they settle into a balance in which the forward and reverse reactions keep running at the same rate, so the amounts stop changing even though nothing has stopped.

In this topic

  • A reaction that stops short
  • Reversible reactions and the double arrow
  • How the two rates come into balance
  • Dynamic, not stopped
  • Physical equilibria
  • Worked example: watching a mixture settle
  • Worked example: approaching from the other side
  • Where the balance lies
  • Conditions for equilibrium
  • Common mistakes to avoid
  • Key takeaways
