The neurological exam and mental status

In a few minutes at the bedside, a clinician can often tell which part of the nervous system is failing, using nothing more than questions, a pen and careful observation. The neurological exam works because function is mapped onto structure, and its first section, the mental status exam, probes the cerebral cortex itself.
