Adding and subtracting rational expressions
Polynomial fractions add exactly the way number fractions do: find a common denominator, build matching forms, combine the tops. The only new skill is that finding that common denominator now requires factoring.
In this topic
- Same denominators: combine the tops only
- Subtracting with a common denominator
- Finding the least common denominator
- Building equivalent fractions
- Worked example: adding with unlike denominators
- Worked example: subtracting across denominators
- Restrictions survive the arithmetic
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Key takeaways
